AI visibility for small businesses in the UK
What AI visibility is, why it matters for a small UK business, and what you can realistically do about it.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is simply whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews mention your business when someone asks for a recommendation. For example: "Who's a reliable dog groomer in Swansea?" or "Best Indian restaurant near Leicester station?"
Instead of a page of links, the person often gets a short answer with a few names. Being one of those names is what AI visibility is about.
Why it matters for small businesses
Small and local businesses rely on being found by people nearby. As more people use AI assistants for everyday questions, a business that AI doesn't know about, or describes wrongly, can miss out without ever realising it. The good news is that the things AI relies on are mostly basics that any small business can get right.
What AI assistants look at
- Your website: whether it clearly says what you do, where, and how to contact you
- Structured data: machine-readable business details (schema.org markup)
- Listings: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and relevant directories
- Consistency: the same name, address and phone number everywhere
- Reviews: genuine reviews and what they say
- Mentions: local news, associations, suppliers and community sites
Practical steps
- Ask a few AI assistants the questions your customers would ask, and note whether you appear and whether the details are right.
- Make sure your website states your services and areas covered in plain text, with a page per main service if possible.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site.
- Complete your Google Business Profile and claim Bing Places.
- Fix any old or inconsistent listings.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to them.
- Recheck every month or so, as answers change.
What nobody can promise
No one controls what an AI assistant says, so be wary of guarantees. What you can control is how clear, accurate and consistent your information is. That gives AI the best chance of picking you.
