AI search optimisation for tradespeople
A practical guide for plumbers, electricians, roofers, builders, landscapers and other UK trades.
Why trades are a natural fit for AI questions
People often need a tradesperson quickly and ask in plain language: "emergency plumber in Newport tonight", "who can fix a flat roof in Derby?", "NICEIC electrician near me". AI assistants answer these questions with a few names. If your details are clear and consistent online, you're in a better position to be one of them.
1. Say exactly what jobs you do and where
List your services in the words customers use, such as "boiler repair", "consumer unit replacement" or "flat roof repair", rather than general terms. State the towns and areas you cover in text, not just on a map image. If you cover several towns, a short page or section for each area you genuinely serve helps.
2. Show your qualifications and memberships
If you're Gas Safe registered, NICEIC or NAPIT approved, a FENSA installer or a member of a trade body, say so clearly and include your registration number where appropriate. These are things customers ask AI about directly. Only list memberships you actually hold.
3. Get your listings in order
Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with the right primary category (for example "Plumber" or "Roofing contractor"), service list, hours and real photos of your work. Make sure the trade directories you use, such as Checkatrade, TrustATrader, MyBuilder or Yell, show the same business name, phone number and area.
4. Make reviews part of every job
Reviews are a strong signal for both people and AI. Send a short message with your Google review link after each finished job. Never buy or write fake reviews; it breaks platform rules and is banned under UK consumer law.
5. Answer common questions on your site
A short FAQ helps: do you charge a call-out fee, do you offer emergency call-outs, what areas do you cover, are you insured, do you give free quotes. Plain answers help customers and give AI something clear to quote.
6. Add structured data
Schema.org has specific types for many trades, such as Plumber, Electrician, RoofingContractor, HVACBusiness and GeneralContractor. Adding this markup with your name, phone, areas served and hours makes your details easier for machines to read.
7. Check what AI says about you
Ask ChatGPT and Google something like "best [your trade] in [your town]" every month. Note whether you're mentioned and whether the details are right. Answers vary, so look at the trend rather than one result.
